Autograph letter signed, dated : St. Leonard's on Sea, 23 April 1874, to Richard Peyton in Birmingham, 1874 Apr. 23.

Explaining his position with regard to soloists, observing that the principal English singers do no sing music for which they get no royalty, stating his objection to that system, noting his "natural desire" to choose, for the performance of his music, singers from Mrs. Weldon's school "(which, I firmly believe, will be acknowledged, by 1879, as the only thorough one)," expressing regret that so much time has been wasted but adding that "I cannot feel in any way to blame for the miscarriage of the negotiations," etc.; with an envelope in Gounod's hand addressed to Peyton, postmarked [Paris] Apr. 13 1877.
